Birthplace: Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Leland Carlson, age 88, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak after a brief illness. Leland was born October 17, 1924 in Red Oak, Iowa the son of Clarence and Agnes (Carlson) Carlson. He graduated from Coburg High School and served in Company M of the Iowa Army National Guard. He was united in marriage to Charlotte Church on February 27, 1955 in Shenandoah, Iowa. Leland drove a truck hauling rock in the summers and grain in the winters. He later bought a milk route which he worked for several years before starting to work for the Red Oak Community Schools as a bus driver. He also worked at the Farmers Mercantile and JD Oil Company. He retired from driving a bus after 32 years of service to the school district. He then went back to work as a custodian for the school at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church when Inman Primary School was being built. He was a long time member of the Red Oak Presbyterian Church and a former member of the International Order of Oddfellows. Leland enjoyed having coffee with his buddies at McDonalds and HyVee. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife: Charlotte in 2004; brothers: Carroll and Quentin; and sister: Bernice Swenson. Survivors include his daughter: Carla Kirchert and husband Les of Essex, IA; son: Curtis Carlson and wife Liz of Clarinda, IA; grandchildren: Holly Heronimus and husband Troy of Harlan, IA; Stacy Shockey and husband Jason of Council Bluffs, IA; Brian Kirchert and wife Laura of Essex, IA; and Corey Carlson of Warrensburg, MO; great grandchildren: Brayden, Eric, Cole, CJ, Paxton, Mariska, and Brody; sister-in-law: Mildred Elliott of Shenandoah, IA; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Friday, August 30, 2013 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Montgomery County Animal Rescue or the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
