Birthplace: Hamburg, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Leila Howell, age 93, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Leila Fern Howell was born June 1, 1912 in Hamburg, Iowa the daughter of Albert and Clara (Snyder) English. She attended schools at Mt. Etna and Massena, Iowa. Later her family moved to a farm northeast of Grant, Iowa where Leila finished her schooling and graduated in 1930. In her early adult life, Leila had several different occupations to support her and her children. Some of these jobs included: delivering blocks of ice, housecleaning, and waitressing. During WWII, she went to Arizona and worked for the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation as a "Rosie the Riveter" on PB2y2 Sea Planes. Later Leila returned to Iowa, where she lived and worked the remainder of her life in the Montgomery County area. On June 30, 1977, Leila retired from the Union Carbide Company after twenty-eight years of service. Leila loved gardening, jig-saw and crossword puzzles, reading, and her family. Leila was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Loyal English and Orville English; and sister: Velma Freshour. Survivors include her children: Dorothy Carrico of Waukesha, Wisconsin; Wayne Bills of Dexter, Iowa; Helen Hey and husband Don of Ankeny, Iowa; and Peter Soda and wife Delores of Red Oak, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gerald Wiser officiating. Burial will be in the Grant, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Monday, January 30, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
