Birthplace: Diagonal, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Herbert Lee Walters, age 93, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2015 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Lee was born October 29, 1921 in Diagonal, Iowa the son of Charles Byron and Edna Fern (Overholser) Walters. The family lived in Diagonal for a short time then moved to Bedford, Iowa where Lee graduated from Bedford High School in 1939. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1945 during WWII. Upon his return from the war, He moved to Minden, Nebraska where he worked in construction. Lee was united in marriage to Mary Dawson on August 2, 1946 in Hiawatha, Kansas. They moved to Red Oak, Iowa where Lee took a job with Hawkeye Lumber. He later worked for Peterson Appliance as a TV repairman and a salesman. He started Walters Electric in the late 1950's and also worked at Eveready Battery Company for many years. Lee was a lifetime member of the Red Oak Elks Lodge. He enjoyed fixing things, was a movie buff, enjoyed sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, enjoyed having coffee at the Rainbow, and loved his family very much. Preceding him in death were his parents; son: James Lee Walters in 1976; wife: Mary Walters in 2006; brother: Keith Walters; and sister: Ada Fern Helm. Survivors include his daughter: Janet Maynes of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren: Pat Maynes and wife Kelly of Red Oak, IA; Jill Roll and husband Brian of Somerville, NJ; and Jeff Walters and wife Betsy of W. Hartford, CT; great grandchildren: Tucker, Grace, and Libby Walters; Jarrett and Carter Maynes; and Ben and AJ Roll; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Pastor Caryn Pedersen officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association or the Red Oak Elks Lodge. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
