Obituary

Birthplace: Blairsburg,Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Laverne "Vern" Snyder, age 87, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2009 at the Red Oak Good Samaritan Center. Vern was born on December 23, 1921 to Harvey and Mattie (Cade) Snyder in Blairsburg, Iowa where he spent his childhood. He graduated from Blairsburg High School in 1939. He enlisted and served in WWII with the US Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He worked on B-52s on bases in Texas, Kansas, and California. After the war, he returned to Iowa and eventually joined Northwestern Bell in Webster City. He worked for Northwestern Bell for 34 years, missing just 7 days of work due to illness. While working on a project in southeastern Iowa, he met Helen Marie Snodgrass of Oskaloosa who was an office clerk also for Northwestern Bell. They met at a Telecommunication Workers of America union meeting. They dated and were married on February 13, 1953. Vern and Helen lived in Webster City for a number of years. Northwestern Bell eventually transferred Vern and family to Atlantic for a few years, and then to Red Oak in 1972 where he lived for the rest of his life. Vern was a lifelong woodworker and made many toys and furniture for friends and family. He enjoyed fishing and was blessed with a family who shared in that joy. He liked to garden and enjoyed his homegrown tomatoes and peppers. He was an avid reader and enjoyed books, newspapers, and magazines throughout his life. Vern was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Charlotte Jones. Vern is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen, and three sons: Ross (Lorene) of Manchester; Larry of Placerville, CA; and Roy (Ann) of Des Moines. His grandchildren are David, Jonathan, and Andrew of Manchester. Memorial services will be held 2 PM Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Pastor Elizabeth Dilley officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Red Oak Public Library or the Red Oak Good Samaritan Center. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
