Birthplace: Mitchell, SD Resided In: Houston, AK Larry Roger Varilek, age 61, of Houston, Alaska, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2015 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa. Roger was born August 21, 1953 in Mitchell South, Dakota, the son of Edward and Mildred (Simunek) Varilek. He graduated from the Stuart, Nebraska high school and moved to Minnesota to work with his brother, Bob, for two years. Larry then entered the US Army during the Vietnam War serving in Korea and Alaska. He attended aviation school in Alaska and worked for the railroad and the United States Postal Service. He was united in marriage to Young Yi in May of 1984 in Seattle, Washington. They have lived all of their married life in Alaska. Larry was a very kind, warm hearted man who would help anyone in need and enjoyed collecting antiques. Larry was preceded in death by his father: Edward Varilek. Survivors include his wife: Young Varilek of Houston, AK; daughter: Rose Marie Varilek of E. Wenatchee, WA; mother: Mildred Varilek of Stuart, NE; brothers: Bob Varilek and wife Charlotte of Windom, MN; Jerry Varilek and wife Linda of Lamar, NE; John Varilek and wife Carol of Culbertson, NE: Rex Varilek and wife Pat of Red Oak, IA; and Dean Varilek of Stuart, NE; sisters: Jeanette Grote and husband Kermit of Newell, IA and Gloria Penas and husband Ron of Ft. Calhoun, NE; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. There will be a family viewing with cremation to follow and burial at a later date. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel, of Red Oak, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
