Obituary

Kirk Samples, Jr., age 90, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away, Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Kirk was born May 9, 1932 near Red Oak, Iowa, the son of Kirk and Mary (Harover) Samples. He was raised in rural areas of Montgomery County and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1950. He enlisted in the Unites States Navy serving from 1951 until 1955. Kirk then attended Barber College. He then joined the United States Air Force serving from 1958 until 1974 when he retired. During his time in the Air Force, Kirk was united in marriage to Deloris Waters on December 4, 1960 in Corvallis, Oregon. Upon retirement from the Air Force, the family moved back to Red Oak, Iowa where Kirk worked for Montgomery County Memorial Hospital for 21 years before retiring again. Kirk and Deloris raised their family on the Samples family farm in rural Montgomery County. He loved gardening and spending time outdoors enjoying the land. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Willard Samples and wife Della; Earl Samples and wife Marian; Elvin Samples and wife Ramona; and Tom Samples; sisters: Effa Anderson and husband Merlin and Mary Magneson and husband Duane; nephews: David Samples and Kirk Thomas Samples; and niece: Dorothy (Samples) Mattice. Survivors include his wife: Deloris Samples of Red Oak, IA; children: Mitch Samples and wife Tara of Waukee, IA and Dawn Samples of Wilmington, NC; 7 grandchildren: Emma, Elle, Karsten, and Ian of Waukee, IA; Chase Samples of Red Oak, IA; and Josie and Gunny Peterson of Wilmington, NC; 6 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Dale Samples of Washington State and Loneta Gardner and husband Delvin of Osmond, NE; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends. Graveside memorial services will be held 11 AM Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
