Birthplace: College Springs, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Keith Nowels, age 81, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Richard "Keith" Nowels was born December 31, 1931 in College Springs, Iowa the son of Wayne and Edna (Woodard) Nowels. He attended school in College Springs and began farming at a young age. He lived for several years in California before moving back to Tenville, Iowa where he farmed and later operated the service station. Keith was united in marriage to Vera May Peterson on June 21, 1951. He worked at Union Carbide Company in Red Oak for a short time before moving to Creston where he worked for the Curtis Candy Company. He moved back to Red Oak and worked for Union Carbide retiring after 32 years of service under the brand of Eveready. Keith also worked other jobs during his employment at the battery company. Keith loved to tinker and fix things, playing cards, traveling, camping in California and Texas after retirement, family reunions, and just enjoyed being with his family. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife: Vera May Nowels on May 15, 2000; brothers: Claire and Dean; sisters: Velma, Jean, and Hollis; and granddaughter: Shannon Michael. Survivors include his children: Barbara Michael and husband Bob of Red Oak; Rich Nowels and wife Kelly of Pleasant Hill, IA; Rod Nowels and special friend Connie Bowen and Roger Nowels and wife Deanna of Red Oak; grandchildren: Sean Nowels and wife Julia of Littleton, CO; Stephanie Nowels of Council Bluffs, IA; Zac Nowels and wife Amber of Kansas City, KS; Katie Nowels-Sapp of Red Oak; Shawn Michael and wife Cynthia of New Braunfels, TX; Stacey Ludwig of Brighton, CO; Nick Michael and special friend Laura Mouch of Griswold, IA; Kobi Nowels of Council Bluffs; Brianna Nowels of Brooklyn, NY; and Shaely Nowels of Red Oak; great grandchildren: Ashley, Austin, Madison, Isabella, Sophia, Austin, Kassidy, Dakota, Sheyann, Kaliann, Lexi, and Kaide; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. A celebration of life service will be held 10:30 AM Monday, April 29, 2013 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Pastor Brett White officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Sunday, April 28, 2013 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Heartland Hospice or the Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
