Karen Lisa "Bok Ja" Sakai, age 81 of Pearl City, Hawaii passed away on March 11, 2022 peacefully at her daughters' home in Red Oak, Iowa. Karen was born in Seoul, Korea on September 25, 1940. She was the daughter of Yoon Jung Mok and Lee Il Bun. She attended school in South Korea, until immigrating to the United States in 1961.
Karen was united in marriage to Richard Meggison on January 16, 1961 in Seoul, Korea, where Richard was serving in the US Army. Four children were born to this union: Kevin Lee, William Joseph, Lisa Suzanne and Robert Jon. They lived in many places as an Army family; including France, Hawaii, California, Iowa, and Kansas. Karen was later married to Harold Sakai in 1974 in Honolulu, Hawaii until his passing.
Karen was a very active senior. She owned a local grocery store in Hawaii for many years prior to her cancer diagnosis in June 2021. She had also owned a vegetable market, bar and restaurant throughout her life. She loved attending the flea markets and interacting with people. She continued to make Korean food products and sold goods until she no longer could. In her final months, she moved to Red Oak, Iowa to be with daughter Lisa and her family to help care for her.
Preceding her in death were her parents Yoon Jung Mok & Lee Il Bun; husband, Harold Sakai; son, Robert Jon Meggison; and brothers Yoon Jae Won (Kim Aae Ja), Yoon Jae Heung (Han Hae Ja). Survivors include her companion of 23 years, Randall Cudal of Pearl City, Hawaii; brother Yoon Jae Han (Lee Pil Kyu) of San Jose, California; sister-in-law, Yoon Hae Ja of Korea; children, Kevin Lee Meggison (Lisa Xa) of Newark, California, William Joseph Meggison, Lisa Rice (William Curtis) of Red Oak, Iowa; Stepson, Dean Sakai (Chris) of Bruchsal, Germany; grandchildren, Matthew (Megan), Lani-Lee, Janelle, Candice, Kelly, Diana, Christina, Alec Wane (Christina), Ian Richard (Sarah Chun), Alissa Kalena-Lois, Trulia Leilani, Ciera, Jenny, and Merriam; Nieces and Nephews, Young Mi Park (Daniel), Jessica Lim (Jae), Jane Lee (Ill Song); Jennefer Kang (Sean), Amy Cho (Ed), Janice Chun (Dave), Peter Yoon (Tina), Hyoyoung Choi (Dong Sun) all of California, Young Kook (Ki Young Hee), Michelle Choi (John) and Joyce Ra of Virginia; Yoon Young Shim and Yoon Young Suk of Seoul Korea.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
