Birthplace: Montevallo, Missouri Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Juanita Thorne, age 81, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Monday, December 15, 2003 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Juanita LaVerne Thorne was born May 8, 1922 in Montevallo, Missouri the daughter of Raymond and Goldia (Green) Brees. The family moved to Iowa in 1924 where Juanita attended school and graduated from the Stanton, Iowa High School in 1939. Juanita was united in marriage to Clarence Thorne on August 3, 1942 in Maryville, Missouri. They lived all of their lives in the Red Oak area. Juanita was a homemaker and later worked for Montgomery Ward for 20 years before working for Houghton State Bank for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Faith Rebekah Lodge, a volunteer for the Bloodmobile, and was a volunteer reader at Inman School. She also enjoyed making quilts for family members and making crafts to give as gifts. Juanita was always the one to organize class reunions and Memorial Day gatherings. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Clarence Thorne on February 19, 2002; her sister: Dorothy Rhodes; her brother: Vernon Brees; and an infant brother: John Brees. Survivors include her 2 daughters; Carol Townsend and her husband Robert of Henderson, Iowa; and Joan Preston and her husband Richard of Prescott, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sister: Maxine Hall of Atlantic, Iowa; brother: Deane Brees and his wife Darlene of Nodaway, Iowa; 4 brothers-in-law: Edvert Thorne and his wife Millie of Wichita, Kansas; Woodrow Thorne of Wichita, Kansas; Kermit Thorne and his wife Deanna of Kansas City, Kansas; and Keith Thorne and his wife Vicki of Basehor, Kansas; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, December 18, 2003 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Derek Watt officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak is in charge of arrangements.
