She grew up at Highland View Resort, a fishing resort and fox farm, her parents built and operated on Hancock Lake in north central Wisconsin. After her dad passed away and her brothers were serving in WWII, Joyce became instrumental in operating the resort and fox farm. She married Robert "Bud" I. Her horse career spanned decades and included managing large stables, operating her own stables, giving riding instruction plus training, boarding, breeding and raising horses. She was a devoted 4-H horse project leader in Wisconsin and Mills and Montgomery counties in Iowa. Joyce became a certified "Sally Swift" riding instructor and worked with the Tellington-Jones TTEAM method of training horse and rider. Joyce was a confident riding instructor and her students fondly referred to her as, "The General". She moved to Southwest Iowa in 1980 and called it her home for the remainder of her life.
