Birthplace: Marcus, Iowa Resided In: Garden City, Kansas John P. Wankum, age 62, of Garden City, Kansas died on Saturday, November 25, 2006 at the Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born December 13, 1943 in Marcus, Iowa the son of Urban T. and Clara Hansen Wankum. On September 3, 1967, he married Linda L. Young in Red Oak, Iowa. A resident of Garden City since 1977, moving from Omaha, Nebraska he had been a plant supervisor at the Cargill Molassas Terminal in Omaha and stayed with the company retiring after nearly 36 years of service. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Garden City and was a National Guardsman. He enjoyed golfing, playing softball in his earlier years and was dedicated to his family and his work. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son. Survivors include his wife: Linda (Young) Wankum of Garden City, Kansas; 1 Son: Phil Wankum of Manhattan, Kansas; 1 Daughter: Carla Wankum of Wichita, Kansas; 1 Sister: Jean Sohl of Cleveland, Texas; 4 Grandchildren: Lauren Wankum of Manhattan, Kansas; Christine Wankum of Manhattan, Kansas; Zachary Wankum of Manhattan, Kansas; and Emily Wankum of Manhattan, Kansas; two sisters-in-law: Fern Olson of the Villisca Good Smaritan Center; and Lois Schmid and husband George of Red Oak, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 2, 2006 At the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Burial of the cremated remains will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established in memory of John. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
