Birthplace: Juniata, Nebraska Resided In: Red Oak, IA John J. "Jack" Portz, age 73, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Friday, January 4, 2002 at the Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital in Sun City West, Arizona. John Joseph "Jack" Portz was born April 6, 1928 in Juniata, Nebraska the son of Edward and Loretta (Hoffman) Portz. He was raised in the Roseland, Nebraska area and graduated from the Roseland High School in 1946 before entering the Navy and serving his country from 1946 until 1948. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln graduating with a degree in agronomy and economics. Jack was united in marriage to Gena Rose Hawes on June 28, 1952 in Kenesaw, Nebraska. Jack worked in the field of agricultural chemical sales in Nebraska and Iowa until 1974 when Gena and Jack moved to Red Oak. He owned and operated Red Oak Farm Supply and White House Lawns until 1993. Jack served as President of the Iowa Fertilizer and Chemical Dealers Association in 1976. He was also a member of the Red Oak Elks Lodge #1304, the St. Mary's Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus Council #9726. After his retirement, Jack enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother: Richard. Survivors include his wife: Gena Portz of Red Oak, Iowa; 2 sons: Michael Portz and his wife Lori of Red Oak, Iowa; and Joel Portz and his wife Annette of Shawnee, Kansas; 2 daughters: Kimberly Curtis and her husband Dennis of St. Charles, Missouri; and Sally Burk and her husband Steve of Lawrence, Kansas; grandchildren: Tyler, Erin, & Chad Curtis; Katie & Maggie Burk; and Brooke Portz; 3 brothers: Kenneth Portz of Haysville, Kansas; Robert Portz of Milford, Nebraska; and William Portz of Gladstone, Missouri; 2 sisters: Antoinette Billesbach of Hastings, Nebraska; and Elaine Kral of Phoenix, Arizona; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral Mass will be held 10 AM Wednesday, January 9, 2002 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father James Kleffman officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Rosary will be held at 7 PM Tuesday, January 8, 2002 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with visitation to follow. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
