Obituary

Birthplace: Edwards, Missouri Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa John O. Herren, age 92, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Care Center after an extended illness. John Oran Herren was born December 6, 1917 in Edwards, Missouri the son of William and Mabel (Platt) Herren. The family moved to the Hawthorne area when John was a young boy. His father died when he was very young and John quit school after the 8th grade to start working to support the family. He started as a hired hand for farmers. He was united in marriage to Florence Glassinger on August 2, 1939 in Emerson, Iowa. To this union, three children were born: John E., Floyd E., and Dorothy. They farmed north of Red Oak and moved into Red Oak in the late 1940's. John worked for many years in the automobile industry as a mechanic. He worked for several different local businesses including the Studebaker Dealership, Ford Dealership, and Ralph Peterson before starting a long career with McAlpin Motors, retiring in January of 1994. John was preceded in death by his parents and his wife: Florence Herren on August 3, 1998. Survivors include his children: John E. Herren and wife Coleen; Floyd "Ed" Herren; and Dororthy Herren all of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: John J. Herren and Cindy Herren both of Red Oak, Iowa; brothers: Charles Herren and Alva Herren both of Colorado; his dog and companion: K.C.; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. JoAnn Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the family. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
