Birthplace: Lewisville, Colorado Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa John R. McKenzie, age 90, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly of Newton, Iowa passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. John Robert McKenzie was born August 12, 1914 in Lewisville, Colorado the son of James and Dora (Brown) McKenzie. The family moved to Harvey, Iowa where John graduated in 1931 from the Harvey High School. He was united in marriage to Edith Young on March 12, 1936 in Newton, Iowa. To this union was born a son, Gerold "Jerry" McKenzie. John worked in an underground coal mine for 21 years and was the superintendent of the Clinton Rock Quarry for 30 years. He and Edith lived in Grant, Iowa from 1951-1956, Camanche, Iowa from 1956-1984, and Newton, Iowa from 1984 until May of 2004 at which time they moved to Red Oak, Iowa. John was known for enjoying his hobby of woodworking. He was preceded in death by his parents; son: Jerry McKenzie in 1963; 3 sisters: Violet, Elsie, and Margaret; and a brother, Kenneth. Survivors include his wife of 68 years: Edith McKenzie of Red Oak, Iowa; 2 granddaughters: LaDonna Focht and husband Mark of Villisca, Iowa; and Deb Liebig and husband Mike of Gretna, Nebraska; 7 great grandchildren: Andrew Focht and wife Erin of Villisca, Iowa; Aaron Focht of Villisca, Iowa; Lindsay Sunderman of Gretna, Nebraska; Ryan Focht of Villisca, Iowa; Shelby Sunderman of Gretna, Nebraska; Amanda Focht of Villisca, Iowa; and Cassady Sunderman of Gretna, Nebraska; 2 nieces: Dora Nielson of Marion, Iowa; and Dixie Norton of Des Moines, Iowa; many cousins and other relatives and friends. Graveside funeral services will be held 2 PM Friday, December 17, 2004 at the Grant, Iowa Cemetery with Kieffer Lehman officiating. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice. There will be open visitation at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
