Birthplace: Elliott, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa John Russell Maynes, age 86, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away, Saturday, June 25, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Care Center after an extended illness. John Russell Maynes was born March 2, 1919 near Elliott, Iowa the son of Claude and Clara (Kindig) Maynes. Russell graduated from Red Oak High School in 1937 and began his lifelong farming career. Russell served in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. He took his training at Lowry Field, Colorado and Flex Gunnery School in Kingman, Arizona. He was stationed in the European Theater in Fogia, Italy. He flew 35 missions as a bombardier in a B-17. He was a 50+ year member of the American Legion Lorraine Post #67 of Red Oak, Iowa. Russell was united in marriage to Avis Noel Frazier on May 25, 1946 in Hiawatha, Kansas. They farmed all of their lives near Red Oak, Iowa. Preceding him in death were his parents; sister: Della Mass; 2 brothers: Darwin and Earl; and 2 brothers-in-law: Clarence Mass and Wayne Halvin. Survivors include his wife: Avis Maynes of Red Oak, Iowa; 2 sons: Larry Maynes and wife Janine of Urbandale, Iowa; and Keith Maynes and wife Bridgette of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Shellie Hodges and husband Mel of Bradenton Beach, Florida; Pat Maynes and wife Kelly of Red Oak, Iowa; Jill Maynes of Teaneck, New Jersey; and Heather Strang and husband Dr. Steven Strang of Des Moines, Iowa; great grandchildren: Stephanie and Stacia Hodges both of Bradenton Beach, Floirda; and Jarrett and Carter Maynes both of Red Oak, Iowa; sister: Effa Halvin of Red Oak, Iowa; sister-in-law: Dorothy Doss of Fresno, California; and Pat and Jill's mother: Janet Maynes of New Brighton, Minnesota; and many other relatives and friends. Graveside funeral services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery with Jerry Dietz officiating. There will be open visitation at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Rescue Unit.
