Birthplace: Thurman, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Joan Houtchens, age 73, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away, Friday, January 3, 2003 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak. Joan Houtchens was born September 20, 1929 in Thurman, Iowa the daughter of James and Mildred (Johnson) Huffman. She grew up in Glenwood, Iowa and moved to Red Oak in 1956. Joan was united in marriage to David Houtchens on June 29, 1958 in Red Oak, Iowa. She worked at Union Carbide before working as a cook for the Red Oak Community School District, retiring in 2001 after 25 years of service. Joan was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, David Houtchens in 1974. Survivors include her son: Ron Lidgett of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter: Reva Potter and husband Frank of Nashua, New Hampshire; 7 grandchildren; Aaron Potter and wife Juanita of Brookline, New Hampshire; Sean Potter of Nashua, New Hampshire; Jennifer Ladeu and husband Richard of Merrimack, New Hampshire; Scarlet Lidgett of Red Oak, Iowa; Shari Courtier and husband Allen of Emerson, Iowa; Shana Million and husband David of Red Oak, Iowa; and James Lidgett and wife Treene of Kona, Hawaii; and 11 great-grandchildren; 2 Sisters: Detta Meggison and husband Max of Red Oak, Iowa; and Judith Huffman of Red Oak, Iowa, 2 nieces, 1 nephew and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Chris Burgett officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM Monday, January 6, 2003 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
