Birthplace: Hamburg, Iowa Resided In: Hastings, Iowa Jesse Wendell "Jay" Perkins, age 69, of Hastings, Iowa, passed away, Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at his home. Jesse was born April 4, 1949 in Hamburg, Iowa the son of Jesse Junior and Lois (Jones) Perkins. He was raised in the Nodaway and Hastings, Iowa communities graduating from Nishna Valley High School in 1967. He served in the United States Army and was stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado before being deployed to Vietnam for one year. Jay was united in marriage to Susan Patterson on April 20, 1968. After his war service, he returned home and attended Iowa Western Community College in the Tool and Die program. He was a Journeyman Machinist all of his working career retiring from American Machine in Omaha. Jay was a member of the Hastings United Methodist Church, the Levi Burton American Legion Post #575 serving as Commander for many years, Goldwing Touring Association, NRA, was a 4-H rifle instructor, Range Safety Office of SW Iowa Sportsman Club, retired Hastings Volunteer Fireman, and a former Hastings City Council member. He enjoyed gunsmithing, shooting at the gun range with family, and elk hunting in Colorado. Jay loved panning for sapphires in Montana. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, taking many trips, and, of course, traveling with Susan. Jay was also known to be a practical joker which many of his friends and family already know. And he never knew a stranger. Preceding him in death was his father. Survivors include his mother: Lois Perkins of Council Bluffs, IA; wife: Susan Perkins of Hastings, IA; children: Jesse Perkins and fiancé Deanna Luty of Glenwood, IA; Kristin Perkins of Emerson, IA; and Matthew Perkins and wife Ingrid of Emerson, IA; grandchildren: Jesse "Nick" Perkins and Nathan "Nate" Perkins of Glenwood, IA; Isabelle "Izzy" Perkins of Red Oak, IA; Matthew "Mason" Perkins and Johnathan Perkins of Emerson, IA; brother: Russell Perkins and wife Betty of Hermitage, MO; sisters: Pat Trainer and husband Jerry of Lincoln, NE and Carol Hannsen and husband Randy of Urbandale, IA; brother-in-law: Jerry Patterson and wife Geri of Bellevue, NE; sisters-in-law: Sandy Larson and husband Lambert of Gretna, NE and Candie Dial and husband Bob Carpenter of Hastings, IA; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the Hastings United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will be in the Hastings, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Friday, November 16, 2018 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Hastings United Methodist Church or the Levi Burton American Legion Post #575 for the Boys State Program. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
