Birthplace: Oak Park, Illinois Resided In: Rural Red Oak, Iowa Jean E. Rogers Shields, age 83, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away, Sunday, October 12, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Care Center after an extended illness. Jean Elizabeth Rogers Shields was born May 9, 1925 in Oak Park, Illinois the daughter of George and Maude (Hunt) Rogers. She was raised in the Chicago area graduating from Wheaton, Illinois High School in 1943. Jean was united in marriage to William T. Shields on June 15, 1946 in Ames, Iowa. They were both attending Iowa State University at that time. Both she and Bill graduated in 1948. In 1949 they moved to the farm where they currently reside. Jean was a homemaker raising her family until 1967 when she went back to school at Northwest Missouri State University to get her teaching degree. She started teaching at Carson where she retired in 1982. Jean was a long time member of the Center Ridge Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and was very active for many years. Jean loved playing the piano, giving piano lessons, directing the church choir and community chorus, traveling, and she was a very talented painter. Jean was recognized for her volunteer efforts with Planned Parenthood and was known for her sense of humor. Preceding her in death were her parents and two brothers: George and Bill Rogers. Survivors include her husband: Bill Shields of Red Oak, Iowa; children: David Shields and wife Linda of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Charlotte Shields of Omaha, Nebraska; and Ava Dorrance and husband Dan of Red Oak, Iowa; three grandchildren: Steven Shields and Susan Shields both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Robin Vovolka of Omaha, Nebraska; brother-in-law: Ralph Jackson of Red Oak, Iowa; sister-in-law: Bonnie Rogers of LaFarge, Wisconsin; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. J. Keith Cook officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-9 PM Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Center Ridge Presbyterian Church or the Good Samaritan Care Center Memory Unit. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
