Birthplace: South Dakota Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Irvin H. Palm, age 85, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at the Stanton Care Center in Stanton, Iowa after an extended illness. Irvin H. Palm was born October 31, 1919 in South Dakota the son of Gustav "Albert" and Ida (Johnson) Palm. The family moved to a farm near Essex, Iowa when Irv was three years old. Irv was confirmed in the St. John's Lutheran Church in 1935. He graduated from the Essex High School in 1938 and went to California to work for the North American Aircraft Company as a sheet metal worker. He worked on B-52's and P-51's. Later he enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII. Irv served in the Aleutian Islands and the South Pacific on the USS Pyro ammunition ship. After his return from the war he attended training as a watchmaker. He was united in marriage to Margaret Jean "Peg" Burnside on June 25, 1948 in Cherokee, Iowa. Irv and Peg moved to Red Oak, Iowa where he worked for Cole Jewelry and eventually owned and operated the business until his retirement in 1984. Irv was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #1304, and enjoyed boating at Viking Lake, fishing, and golfing. Irv was preceded in death by his parents; his son and daughter-in-law: David and Susan Palm and grandson Jacob on December 2, 1981; his wife: Peg Palm on August 15, 1982; 3 brothers: Clarence, Raymond, and Vernon; and sister: Marie Palm Whalen. Survivors include his 2 sisters-in-law: Rachel Palm of Peoria, Arizona; and Irene Burnside of Omaha, Nebraska; 2 nieces: Judy Gates of Blue Springs, Missouri; and Sarah Burnside of Omaha, Nebraska; nephew: Dennis Burnside of Omaha, Nebraska; special cousin: Howard Palm and wife Trudy of Tennessee; his companion of 20 years: Verna Heuer of Red Oak, Iowa and the family they shared: Larry and Sherry Heuer and family of Red Oak, Iowa; Linda and Dan Boehle and family of Omaha, Nebraska; and Bruce Heuer and family of Red Oak, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Saturday, December 18, 2004 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Howard Palm officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Friday, December 17, 2004 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Rescue Unit or the Boys Scouts of America. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
