Birthplace: Emerson, Iowa Resided In: Shenandoah, Iowa Horace Edward Greenwood, age 79, of Shenandoah formerly of Emerson passed away January 23, 2005 in Shenandoah, Iowa. Ed was born March 13, 1926 in Emerson, IA the son of Horace and Gayle (Cramer) Greenwood. He was a 1944 graduate of Emerson High School and joined the U. S. Marines immediately following graduation. Ed spent his 19th birthday in a foxhole on Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged in June of 1946. After serving in the Marines, Ed then returned to the family business in Emerson, Greenwood Lumber. He was united in marriage to Ruth Grahn on October 10, 1950 in the chapel at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Ed was the third generation to own and manage the business until he retired in 1982. While living in Emerson, he was a member of First Baptist Church, American Legion Levi Burton Post #575, Cemetery Association which he took care of the cemetery records for many years, Senior Citizen's Center and Community Club. Over the years Ed has enjoyed hunting and trapping, gardening, woodworking, reading, cooking, bird watching and spending time with his family. He is currently a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah, Iowa where Ed and Ruth have lived for the past 5 years. Ed was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife: Ruth of Shenandoah, Iowa; son: Berkeley Greenwood and wife Nancy of Glenwood, Iowa; 2 daughters: Sherry Hambsch of Shenandoah, Iowa and Shirley Orton and husband Stanley of Shenandoah, Iowa; 7 grandchildren: Brian Maxine, Melissa Ross, Jeffrey Hambsch, Jason Kinsley, John, Scott and Erin Greenwood; 3 great grandchildren: Corky Ross, Soley Kinsley and Sophia Maxine; 1 brother: Berkeley Greenwood and wife Marge of Yakima, Washington; 2 sisters: Betty Carlson and husband Russ of Waverly, Nebraska and Jann Seal of Wickenburg, Arizona; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, January 27, 2005 a the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah with Rev. Rick Sleyster officiating. Burial will be in the Emerson Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Emerson First Baptist Church and the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak is in charge of arrangements.
