Birthplace: Kansas City, Missouri Resided In: Council Bluffs, Iowa formerly Red Oak, Iowa Henry M. Childers, known to many as "Hank", "Sarge", or "Chilly", of Council Bluffs, Iowa formerly of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Friday, November 21, 2008 at the Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs after an extended illness. Henry Monroe Childers was born August 12, 1918 in Kansas City, Missouri the son of Henry Martin and Grace (Liffey) Childers. He grew up in Hastings, Nebraska and attended school there. He worked for Schilling Oil Company and the Railroad as well as the Nebraska National Guard and later the Iowa National Guard. He was united in marriage to Jean Allgood and to this union was born a son: Robert. He later was united in marriage to Jean Wood and to this union two sons were born: John and Rick. "Sarge" had a long career in the National Guard serving during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam retiring in 1978 as a Master Sergeant. His decorations throughout his career include the bronze star along with many others. After his retirement he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. Even though he was retired he spent a great deal of time at the Red Oak Armory just volunteering wherever he was needed. Hank was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Red Oak Eagles Lodge, and the Montgomery County Memorial Court of Honor. He moved to the Amelia Hose Assisted Living in Council Bluffs in 2000 and the Bethany Lutheran Home in 2007. Preceding him in death were his parents; brother: Thomas Childers; and sister: Naomi Walker. Survivors include his children: Robert Childers and wife Debborah of Coburn, VA; John Childers and wife Ann of Red Oak, IA; Rick Childers and wife Dawna of Council Bluffs, IA; Jerry Good and wife Lori of Phoenix, AZ; and Ronald Wood and wife Sue of Council Bluffs, IA; grandchildren: Peggy Bush and husband Kenneth of Kansas City, KS; Robert Childers II and wife Mercedes of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Brandy and John Childers of Red Oak, IA; Christy Childers of Lincoln, NE; Greg Childers of Ft. Stewart, GA; Cheri Paronto and husband Russell and Arthur Good of Kingman, AZ; and Makayla Wood of Council Bluffs, IA; 14 great grandchildren; 2 nieces: Jaque Shriner and husband Sam of Bullhead City, AZ and Joann Castleberry of Dickinson, North Dakota; nephew: Dan Childers of Hasting, NE; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery with military honors. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Monday, November 24, 2008 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Court of Honor, First Baptist Church or Bethany Lutheran Home. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel, Red Oak, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
