Birthplace: Pottawattamie County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Helen Elizabeth Watkins, age 84, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Monday, January 20, 2003 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Helen Watkins was born July 24, 1918, in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Barbara Ann (Lembke) Riepe. She grew up on a farm near Griswold, Iowa and helped her dad on the farm until her mother passed away, then Helen took care of the house. She was united in marriage to Ralph Wayne Watkins on May 3, 1941 in Rockport, Missouri. They lived in Griswold, Iowa until the 1950's when they moved to Red Oak. Helen worked for the Schoenberg's Clothing Store for several years and later for Union Carbide for 20 years. She was very active in the First Christian Church of Red Oak and volunteered many hours at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Helen liked to dance and play cards with friends and family and she loved to clean her house. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Ralph Wayne Watkins on April 16, 1981; one sister; and one brother. Survivors include her 2 daughters: Sylvia Watkins-Castillo and her husband Manuel of Chicago, Illinois; and Viola Gonder and her husband Emmet of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren: Craig Gonder and Beth Gonder of Chicago, Illinois; Michael Wiley of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and Matthew Wiley of Seattle, Washington; 2 sisters: Della Smith of Griswold, Iowa; and Marguerite Ackerman of Red Oak, Iowa; brother: Lawrence Riepe of Griswold, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held 10 AM Thursday, January 23, 2003 at the First Christian Church with Rev. JoAnn Thomas Officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
