Birthplace: Pottawattamie County, Iowa Resided In: Atlantic, Iowa Helen Sunderman, age 89, of Atlantic, Iowa formerly of the Griswold area passed away Saturday, September 14, 2002 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic after a brief illness. Helen G. Sunderman was born May 28, 1913 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa the daughter of Viggo and Laura May (Potter) Miller. She was raised in the Griswold area and graduated from Griswold High School in 1930. She taught at country schools near Griswold and was united in marriage to Lynn Sunderman on May 11, 1941 in Papillion, Nebraska. Helen taught school until she started her family and became a homemaker. Lynn preceded Helen in death on May 2, 1948. Helen later went back to teaching in the country schools, Grant Schools, and retired from the Griswold School District after 38 years of teaching. She lived all of her life in the Griswold area until she moved to the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa five years ago. Helen was a longtime member of the United Church of Christ in Lyman where she was also a member of the Women's Guild. She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Retired Teachers Sorority. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Lynn on May 2, 1948; and her brother: Ronald Miller. Survivors include her 2 daughters: Carolyn Laird and her husband Raymond of Elliott, Iowa; and Luella Oaks and her husband Bob of Logan, Utah; 5 grandchildren: Laura Carlton and her husband Jim of Griswold, Iowa; Cheryl Ervin and her husband Jim of Huxley, Iowa; Greg Anderson of Grand Junction, Colorado; 1st Lt. Michael Anderson of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and Natalie Anderson of Ames, Iowa; 4 great grandchildren: Christina, Alicia, Katie, and Jamie Carlton all of Griswold, Iowa; sister: Hazel Miller of Atlantic, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, September 19, 2002 at the United Church of Christ in Lyman, Iowa with the Rev. James Hansen officiating. Burial will be in the Weirich Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at the United Church of Christ in Lyman, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Atlantic Hospice. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak is in charge of arrangements.
