Helen M. Snyder's Obituary

Birthplace: Oskaloosa, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Helen Snyder, 78, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2013 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after a bout of pneumonia. Helen was born on August 1, 1934 to Lawrence and Bertha (King) Snodgrass in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1952. She enjoyed school, was an excellent student, and carried with her a strong sense of curiosity and learning throughout her life. Upon graduating from high school, she started working for Northwestern Bell. She met Laverne Snyder at a Telecommunication Workers of America union meeting. They dated and were married a few months later on February 13, 1953. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage until Laverne's death in 2009. Helen and Laverne had three sons, Ross, Larry, and Roy - all born in Webster City. Helen and Laverne lived in Webster City for a number of years. Northwestern Bell eventually transferred the family to Atlantic for a few years, and then to Red Oak in 1972 where she lived until her death. Helen was a wonderful wife, mother, and housewife. She enjoyed cooking and made favorite dishes upon request well into her 70's. She purchased Betty Crocker cookbooks for her sons when they started living on their own. Helen was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and served the church in many ways over 30 years. She stayed up on current events and subscribed to two daily newspapers, listened to the radio, and rarely missed the evening news. She also enjoyed watching football (Go Hawks!) and fishing trips to Minnesota. Helen is survived by her sons and daughter-in-laws: Ross (Lorene) of Manchester; Larry of Red Oak; and Roy (Ann) of Des Moines. Grandchildren include David, Jonathan, and Andrew of Manchester. A celebration of life service will be held 11 AM Saturday, April 20, 2013 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Pastor John Chaplin officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at the Blairsburg, Iowa Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
