Birthplace: Des Moines, Iowa Resided In: Brooklyn, Iowa formerly Red Oak, Iowa Helen L. (Campbell) Sheets, age 88, of Brooklyn, Iowa formerly Red Oak, Iowa passed away, Monday, January 5, 2015 in Brooklyn, Iowa. Helen was born March 7, 1926 in Des Moines, Iowa, the youngest of five children to John and Nora (Keonig) Campbell. She graduated from old North High School in Des Moines in 1944 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree from Parsons College in Fairfield Iowa in 1948. "Souppe", as they called her, maintained lifelong friendships with several Parsonites. Helen served her church and community in numerous capacities including Director of Christian Education at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church, played the viola with the Nodaway Valley Symphony in Clarinda and the Ecumenical Strings in Red Oak, sang in church choir, and was a leader and member of many organizations wherever she resided. Helen and Edward Sheets were married on August 6, 1950 at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. They raised two daughters on Skyline Drive in Red Oak: Ruth Elaine (Sheets) Hall, born 1953 and Sarah Louise Sheets-McKeag, born 1958. Helen was a lifelong educator and advocate and taught in the public school system. In their later years Ed and Helen treasured the time spent with their grandchildren, traveling, and camping. Helen is preceded in death by her husband Edward R. Sheets (1986), her daughter Ruth Elaine (Sheets) Hall (1999), son-in-law Mark D. Hall (2012), and siblings John Campbell, Marjorie (Campbell) Jones, and Richard K. Campbell. In-laws, Kenneth and Joan Slump, Maurice and Donna Sheets, Judy Sheets, Robert Shearer, and Walter "Bud" Osborne. Helen is survived by her daughter: Sarah Sheets-McKeag (Gary McKeag); her sister: Rose (Campbell) Osborne; grandchildren: Eric (Lisa) Hall, Laura (Jeff) Gaffney, Julie (Josh) Orman, and Darren McKeag; seven great-grandchildren: Madelyn Gaffney, Alexander Orman, Logan Gaffney, Aurelia Hall, Ruth Orman, and Cass and Kian McKeag; sisters-in-law: Vivian (Doane) Campbell and Jane (Sheets) Shearer; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church with Pastor Caryn Pedersen officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Presbyterian Church, Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, or the American Cancer Society. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
