Birthplace: Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Helen Murphy of Red Oak, Iowa, died Friday, January 15, 2016 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Helen was born June 13, 1922 in Red Oak, Iowa the daughter of Thomas C. and Marian (Marquardt) Murphy. She attended Brownell Hall of Omaha, Nebraska (now Brownell-Talbot) and was a graduate of Scripps College of Claremont, California, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/French literature. A trustee of Montgomery County Memorial Hospital since 1968, she served on the building committee for the new hospital built in 1989. She was a founding member of the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, was coordinator and buyer for the hospital's gift shop for over 40 years, and instigated the Hospital Ball in 1966. She was an active supporter of many civic organizations, including the Montgomery County YMCA, the Historic Preservation Commission, the Montgomery County Historical Society, and the Red Oak Community Playhouse. She was a charter member of the 'Calendar Girls' of the Red Oak Questers. She received the Volunteer Health Service Award from the Iowa Medical Society Alliance in 1994, the Spirit of Red Oak award from the Red Oak Chamber of Commerce in 1997, and the Shining Star Auxiliary Volunteers award from the Iowa Hospital Association in 2010. For many years, she was vice-president of the Express Publishing Co. and a contributor to The Red Oak Express. Helen enjoyed traveling with her family and close friends. She was an avid tennis player who loved her yearly trips to Okoboji with her tennis friends in the summer. Helen enjoyed her weekly bridge game with other bridge enthusiasts, playing Pictionary with her family, ballet, and classical music. Teddy bears and cats had a special place in her heart. Helen was a gracious lady who will be missed by many throughout the Red Oak community. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Thomas D. Murphy in 1999. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Nancy N. Murphy of Red Oak; two nieces, Marjorie Murphy Albertsen and her husband Marc of Grimes, and Marilyn Murphy and Doug Kessler of Red Oak; a great niece, Jenni Overton, her husband Harrison and great, great niece Claire of Grimes; her special friend Jim Petersen of Red Oak; and other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Friday, January 22, 2016 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
