Birthplace: Montgomery County, Iowa Resided In: Henderson, Iowa Harold Hughes, age 87, of Henderson, Iowa passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak after an extended illness. Harold Hunter Hughes was born September 8, 1915 in Lincoln Township of Montgomery County, Iowa the son of Hugh and Sydna (Evans) Hughes. He graduated from Wales High School in 1933 and farmed with his Dad and also enjoyed playing baseball with area teams. Harold served in Company "M" 168th Infantry 34th Division of the Army during World War II in the European, African-Middle East Theatre. He served from February 11, 1941 until being honorably discharged on August 31, 1945. He returned to farming and was united in marriage to Jean Shaffer on March 30, 1947 in Hiawatha, Kansas. Harold and Jean farmed until moving into Henderson in 1975, but Harold continued to help out at the farm. He loved camping and wintered in Florida for eight years. He loved his family, friends, baseball and music. Harold was a member of the Wales Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Post # 530 in Henderson, Iowa for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Mary Doolittle; and brother-in-law: Dale Doolittle. Survivors include his wife: Jean Hughes of Henderson, Iowa; son: Robert Hughes and his wife Cora of Wales, Iowa; 2 daughters: Nancy Naylor and her husband Peter of Palm City, Florida; and Judy Poppell of Stuart, Florida; 5 grandchildren: Chris Hughes of Wales, Iowa; Bill Hughes of Red Oak, Iowa; Jacqueline McBride and her husband John of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Lauren Naylor of Palm City, Florida; and Morgan Naylor of Palm City, Florida; 1 great granddaughter: Mary McBride of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and many other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be held 2 PM Monday, September 23, 2002 at the Gomer Cemetery near Wales, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 2-4 PM Sunday, September 22, 2002 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Henderson Volunteer Fire Department, the Macedonia Rescue Unit, or the Wales Presbyterian Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak is in charge of arrangements.
