Birthplace: Albion, NE Resided In: Red Oak, IA Harlan Earl Sallach, age 99, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away, Monday, September 19, 2016 at the Red Oak Healthcare Community. Harlan was born June 4, 1917 in Albion, Nebraska the son of Joseph and Letty Sallach. The family moved to Red Oak, Iowa where Harlan graduated in the class of 1935. He started farming and later, during the war, worked at a bomber plant. After the war, he came back to the farm and was united in marriage to Hope Smith on February 14, 1948. They made farming their life. Harlan was actively farming until the age of 97. In addition to farming, he enjoyed welding, playing the piano and banjo, his dogs, tractors, and antique cars. Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife: Hope Sallach on June 4, 2000. Survivors include his children: James Sallach and wife Joni of Red Oak, IA; Joe Sallach and wife Barb of Red Oak, IA; Sandra Novotny and husband Jack Duffek of Loveland, CO; and Sharon Woosley and husband Todd of Council Bluffs, IA; grandchildren: Jamie Sallach and wife Shelley, Jeff Sallach and wife Amy, Jason Sallach and wife Corie, Sydney Hope Sallach, and John Harlan Joe Arnold Sallach of Red Oak, IA; step-grandchildren: Mike Novotny of California and Mark Novotny and wife Marcie of Omaha, NE; great grandchildren: Beau, Emma, Cameron, Caden, Gannon, and Brinkley; step-great grandchildren: Paige and Brock Isaacson of Red Oak, IA; and step-great great grandchild: June; brother-in-law: Ernest Smith of Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law: Ramona Manchester and husband Homer of Madrid, IA; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 3 PM Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. A memorial fund is being established. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
