Gordon Eugene "Gordy" Viner, age 78, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Josie Harper Hospice House. Gordon was born on June 7, 1945, to Gerald and Minnie (Wistrom) Viner in Omaha, Nebraska. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Henderson, Iowa. Gordy went to grade school there and graduated from Nishna Valley High School in 1963. He met Sandy Brammer at a dance in Red Oak, Iowa, in December, 1964. They got married on November 12, 1965, in the Methodist Church in Carson, IA. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska as they both had jobs there. Gordy worked at Western Electric and Sandy worked at Boys Town. They had been married ten years when they adopted their son, Don, from Nebraska Children's Home in November, 1975. Gordy went to college at night and got a degree in Business from UNO in 1977. Gordy and Sandy took many trips over the years. In January of 2004, Gordy received a liver transplant at UNMC.
Gordy worked at Western Electric for 35 years before retiring in 2000. He enjoyed bowling and golfing. Gordy was also a hockey fan of the Omaha Knights, the Omaha Lancers, and NHL.
While working, he became involved in the Telephone Pioneers. He served as treasurer at three different times, Vice President. and President of the local group.
Gordy was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Minnie Viner; his brother-in-law, Jim Oliver; and his nephew, Steve Oliver.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sandy, of almost 58 years and his son, Don, and his dogs Maggie and Molly, his two sisters, Ann Oliver from Woodbine, Iowa and Beverly Lewis and husband Darrell Lewis from Roach, Missouri.
A celebration of life service will be held at 12:30 PM Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorials are suggested to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Nebraska Humane Society, or Live On Nebraska. A graveside memorial service will be held 1 PM Monday, August 14, 2023, at the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery with a time of fellowship to be held at the Emerson Community Building after the graveside service.
Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
