Birthplace: Strahan, Iowa Resided In: Villisca, Iowa Gordon Lester "Gordy" Thomas, age 84, of Villisca, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Society. Gordy was born April 19, 1934 near Strahan, Iowa the son of Lester and Flossie (Jones) Thomas. He graduated from the Emerson, Iowa High School in 1951 and later served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Gordy was united in marriage to Janet Brown on January 22, 1956. Three children were born to this union: Gregory Gordon, Leslie Ann, and Suzanne Annette. Gordon was a farmer at heart, but also was a cross country truck driver, a landscaper, a lay pastor to several churches, a chaplain to Christian Resort Ministries, and a volunteer chaplain at the Red Oak Good Samaritan Society. He was also a member of Transport for Christ Ministries. Gordy received his training from Grace Bible Institute in Omaha and later Master Divinity School in Evansville, Indiana where he attended with his wife, Janet. Gordon enjoyed working with Mustang Horses, loved old tractors, motorcycles, and his 1955 Ford. He also spent time bicycling and most of all enjoyed spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter: Leslie Ann Sunderman; brother: Victor Thomas and his wife Marilee; sister: Joyce Thorson and her husband Jack; brothers-in-law: Ray Glassinger, Wilbur Williams, Richard Brown, and Robert Brown; and sister-in-law: Jackie Yeager. Survivors include his wife of 62 years: Janet Thomas of Villisca, IA; children: Gregory Thomas and wife Tricha of York, PA and Suzanne Hoover and husband Jeff of Adair, IA; son-in-law: Dwight Sunderman of Carbon, IA; grandchildren: Daniel Thomas of Harrisburg, PA; Ryan Thomas and wife Jess of York, PA; Layla Houser and husband Jim of Merriam, KS; Derrick Sunderman and wife Jordon of Tripoli, IA; Jason Compton of Colorado; and Kristyna Compton of Shawnee, KS; great grandchildren: Lyla, Quinn, Emmitt, and Owen Thomas; Emylee Houser and Granger Von Houser; and Alivia, Aiden, Kamden, and Keira Sunderman; sisters: Lorraine Williams of Grant, IA and Joanne Glassinger of Red Oak, IA; brothers-in-law: Jim Brown and wife Liz of Tampa, FL and Keith Yeager of Stanton, IA; sister-in-law: Paula Ridenour and husband Jerry of Plano, TX, and many other relatives and friends. A celebration of life visitation with the family will be held from 2-3 PM Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the Faith Community Church. Burial of the cremated remains will take place in the Grant, Iowa Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Villisca Good Samaritan Society and may be directed to Janet Thomas at 117 N. Third Ave., Villisca, Iowa 50864.
