Birthplace: Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Glen R. Lassen, age 72, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Glen Ray Lassen was born June 7, 1940 in Red Oak, Iowa the son of Walter and Myrle (Vannausdle) Lassen. He was raised in West Township of Montgomery County, Iowa graduating from Coburg High School in 1958. While in school, Glen enjoyed sports, was a 4-H member, and was a member of Methodist Youth Fellowship. Upon graduation, Glen started working for the Iowa State Highway Commission. On June 7, 1961, he was united in marriage to Alta L.A.Ferne Myers in Bone Gap, Illinois. Before Glen began farming in 1962, he had worked for Ives Boyington as a carpenter, was a substitute mail carrier, and worked at the ASCS office as a surveyor. Glen was one of the first custom hay balers in the area and when he first started he worked 48 straight hours at baling. Glen baled hay for nearly forty years. He also raised crops, cattle, and hogs in addition to hauling livestock for the sale barn and driving a truck for B & B fertilizer. Glen was very proud of his Hereford cattle and spent many years perfecting his herd. Glen was a member of the NFO, a charter member of the Nishna Church of Christ and currently a member of the Elliott Church of Christ. Over the years, he had many hobbies including his cattle, restoring his Triumph motorcycle, Kelly's 1957 Bel Air and his tractors, studying history and geography, videography, and spending time with his family of whom he was very proud. He and L.A.Ferne provided for their family and felt very blessed that they were able to travel with their children to the East coast, West coast, Mexico, and Canada. Glen was a hard worker and instilled the same ethic in his children. The Lord blessed Glen with an opportunity to receive a pancreas for transplant 19 years ago and another opportunity in 2006 to receive a kidney from his wife of nearly 52 years: L.A.Ferne. Glen truly knew that each day was a gift from the Lord and that you should treasure it. Preceding him in death were his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Lester and Alta Pearl Myers; grandparents: Charles and Emma Vannausdle and Zearil and Hattie Harding. Suvivors include his wife: L.A.Ferne Lassen of Red Oak, IA; children: Kelly Oakleaf and husband Scott of Elliott, IA; Darren Lassen and wife Lila of Red Oak, IA; and Tess Wortinger and husband Mike of Hampton, IA; grandchildren: Charlie Lassen of Red Oak, IA; Katie Reicherts and husband Rick of Waterloo, IA; Seth Wortinger and Kate Harris of Waterloo, IA; and Dana Wortinger and Mandy Swensen of Waterloo, IA; great grandchildren: Joey and Allie Reicherts; sister: Carol York and husband Kieth of Essex, IA; sisters-in-law: Laura May Myers of Grayville, IL and Helen Jane Johnson of Albion, IL; his faithful border collie: Jack; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Church of Christ in Elliott, Iowa. Burial will take place at the Salem Cemetery at 1:30 PM Saturday, March 2, 2013. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Iowa Donor Network, Red Oak Rescue Unit, or the Elliott Church of Christ. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
