Birthplace: Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Gladys Munson, age 85, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Gladys Lila Sophia Bergsten Munson was born August 10, 1918 in Red Oak, Iowa the daughter of Axel and Ellen (Persson) Hilding. The family moved to Salem, South Dakota then Buffalo, Minnesota. After the death of Gladys's father the family moved back to Red Oak. Gladys attended school at Wales and later graduated from the Red Oak High School in 1937. She was united in marriage to Reuben Bergsten on February 9, 1938 in Red Oak, Iowa. They farmed until Reuben's death in 1965. Gladys was united in marriage to Clarence Munson on August 14, 1969 in Red Oak, Iowa. She was a homemaker and cooked for the Coburg School and later the Red Oak Schools. She was a devoted wife, mother, and Christian. She was a member of the First Covenant Church where she taught Sunday School for over 20 years and was active in Covenant Women. Gladys was also a 4-H Leader for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands. Survivors include her 3 sons: Marvin Bergsten and wife Pat of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Ron Bergsten and Audrey Bergsten both of Tampa, Florida; and Larry Bergsten of Red Oak, Iowa; 5 grandchildren: Mark Bergsten of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Dyan Larsen and husband Kent of Sidney, Iowa; Ben Bergsten and wife Jennifer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Darby Herald and husband Jesse of Tampa, Florida; and Elke Bergsten of Omaha, Nebraska; 6 great grandchildren: Abby Bergsten, Ally Bergsten, Lexy Larsen, Olivia Larsen, Hollis Herald, and Leighton Herald; Sister: Judy Bergsten and husband Dan of Red Oak, Iowa; 2 step-daughters: Shirley Billings and husband Lavon of Red Oak, Iowa; and Charlene Cole of Goodland, Kansas; step-grandson: Scott Billings and wife Molly of Omaha, Nebraska; 2 step-granddaughters: Cristin Cole of Orlando, Florida; and Cynthia Cole of Goodland, Kansas; 2 step-great grandchildren: Nicholas and Elizabeth Billings; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, January 3, 2004 at the First Covenant Church with Rev. Alan Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Friday, January 2, 2004 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the First Covenant Church or the Montgomery County Public Health Nurses.
