Birthplace: Page County, Iowa Resided In: Omaha, NE formerly Red Oak, IA Gladys May Gates, age 98, of Omaha, Nebraska formerly of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha. Gladys was born May 7, 1916 in Page County, Iowa the daughter of Frank and Augusta (Johnson) Hamman. She attended Red Oak High School graduating in 1935. On July 24, 1938 she was united in marriage to Wayne L. Gates in Red Oak. Gladys belonged to Red Oak Presbyterian Church, joining in 1927 and belonged to Woman's Organization Rebecca Circle and received Honorary Life Membership. Gladys and Wayne were active in the church and leaders in Junior High Fellowship, Social Committee and Bible School. In her earlier years, Gladys worked with Boy Scouts as Den Mother and received the Den Mother Award. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary at Stanton for over 50 years. She belonged to Home Department of Monday Club. She enjoyed crafts and was often called upon to decorate for activities in these organizations as well as volunteer to help. Gladys was a member of the Business and Professional Women since 1977 and was honored as "Woman of the Year" in 1998. Gladys worked alongside her husband, Wayne, doing the bookkeeping for their Chrysler-Plymouth dealership, Bryan-Gates Motors until Wayne's death in 1975. She later enjoyed working with the people at Connor's Department Store until it closed. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Wayne; infant daughter: Janice; brothers: Earny, George, and Ralph Hamman; and sisters: Dorothy Olson, Florence Nelson, and Grace Danielson. Survivors include her son: Gary Gates and wife Kathy of Omaha; grandchildren: Bryan Gates and wife Meghan of Minneapolis, MN; Jennie Tews and husband James of Elkhorn, NE; and Michelle Staub and husband Ryan of Prairie Village, KS; great grandchildren: Elyssa and Savhannah Tews and expecting two more in October and January; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church with Rev. Caryn Pedersen officiating. Burial will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Nyman, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Presbyterian Church, Fountain View Senior Living in Omaha, and Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
