Obituary

Birthplace: Cumberland, Iowa Resided In: Villisca, IA Gerald W. "Jim" Peterman, age 83, of Villisca, Iowa passed away Sunday, May 4, 2008 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. Gerald Wayne "Jim" Peterman was born May 9, 1924, in Cumberland, Iowa, the son of Willis and Nell (Tracy) Peterman. He lived in Cumberland until the family moved to the Grant area where he graduated from Grant High School in 1941. Following graduation he farmed with his father until he entered military service. He was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, for seven months as a member of the Military Police until the end of the war. He was a lifetime member of the Villisca American Legion Post. When Jim returned from the military, he continued to farm with his father. On November 12, 1949, he was united in marriage to Florence Gemmill in Red Oak, Iowa. The following March the couple moved to the family farm near Morton Mills when his parents moved to Villisca. The couple remained on the farm and Jim lived there until his death. Jim enjoyed hunting, watching baseball, and playing cards. He raised German Short Hair Pointers for over thirty years. His daughter and granddaughter shared his love of animals. He will be remembered for his love of the land, his keen wit, his work ethic and personal integrity, and his ability to remember baseball trivia. He was a Cardinal baseball fan for many years. Through his hunting friendships with the Atlanta Braves organization, a player once told Jim "you know more baseball facts than anyone I ever knew." Jim's love of baseball stemmed from his early years of playing with the Elliott Blue Sox where he boasted he could play shortstop "like a monkey on a grapevine." Jim spent many proud hours watching his son and his grandsons participate in baseball, basketball, and football. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his sister: Hillis DeVoss and her husband Goerge; and his brother-in-law: Earl Gemmill and his wife Flossie. Surviving are his wife Florence Peterman of Villisca, Iowa; a son: Stanley Peterman and his wife Susie of Grant, Iowa; a daughter: Beverly Schelling and her husband Gaylord of Atlantic, Iowa; five grandchildren: Adam Peterman and his wife Holly of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Amber Sunderman and her husband Phil of Villisca, Iowa; James Schelling of Davenport, Iowa; Dustin Schelling of Artesia, New Mexico; Alex Schelling of Atlantic; man ynieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
