Birthplace: Rural Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Rural Red Oak, Iowa George F. Schmid, age 84, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Monday, September 28, 2009 at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. George Francis Schmid was born October 11, 1924 on the family farm near Red Oak, Iowa the son of Gottfried and Mathilda (Sohm) Schmid. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1943 and was united in marriage to Lois Young on February 3, 1945 in Red Oak, Iowa. They lived all of their life on the same farm where George was born. George even built the farmhouse where he raised his family. George farmed all of his life and also worked for Union Carbide Battery Company retiring after 33 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed snow skiing, water skiing, fishing, traveling, history, and had a wonderful sense of humor. Above all of this, George loved his family and farming. George was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elizabeth Schmid on August 19, 2009. Survivors include his wife: Lois Schmid of Red Oak, Iowa; children: Denis Schmid and wife Kay of Des Moines, Iowa, Dianne Melendez and husband Angel of Waukee, Iowa, David Schmid and wife Jackie of Red Oak, Iowa, Tim Schmid and wife Charla of Red Oak, Iowa, and Teresa Wadhams and husband Mark of Pengilly, Minnesota, grandchildren: Tony Schmid of Des Moines, Iowa, Krista Douglas and husband John of St. Mary's, Iowa, Tammi Parkhurst and husband Tony of Winterset, Iowa, Dominic Melendez and wife Shilo of Tecumseh, Kansas, Andrea Melendez of Des Moines, Iowa, Alicia Melendez of Humble, Texas, Valerie Utsler and husband Corey of Winterset, Iowa, Angela Raffensberger and husband Vincent of Sidney, Nebraska, Aaron Schmid and wife Lisa of Red Oak, Iowa, Emily Schmid of Tempe, Arizona, and Katie Schmid of Davenport, Iowa; 16 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Fern Olson of Villisca, Iowa and Linda Wankum of Garden City, Kansas and many other relatives and friends. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM Friday, October 2, 2009 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Ken Gross presiding. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Recitation of Rosary will be held 6 PM Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with visitation with the family to follow until 8 PM. Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary's Catholic Church or St. Mary's Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
