George LeRoy Petty, age 78, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away, Sunday, December 18, 2022, at his home. George was born November 29, 1944, in Montgomery County, Iowa, the son of Harold LeRoy and Cleo (DeWitt) Petty. George graduated from Griswold High School in 1962. He started working for Hoye, Inc. right after high school. George was united in marriage to Diana Lewis on June 25, 1965 in Elliott, Iowa. They lived in many different places in southwest Iowa before settling in Red Oak in 1976. He worked for Eveready Battery for 33 years retiring in 1998. The last two years before retirement, George and Diana lived in Maryville, Missouri. After retirement, they moved to Elliott, Iowa. George worked for Red Oak Community Schools for 12 years and moved back to Red Oak in 2019. Over the years, George was a volunteer fireman for Villisca Fire Department and Red Oak Fire Department. His hobbies included bird hunting, fishing, playing cards, and spending time with his grandkids.
Preceding him in death were his parents and sister: Dolores Schrier. Survivors include his wife: Diana Petty of Red Oak, IA; children: Lisa Bailey of Red Oak, IA; Bill Petty and wife Lisa of Stanton, IA; Jodi Petty of Red Oak, IA; and Sarah Culver and husband Wade of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren: Ashley Parker of Council Bluffs, IA; Allison Petty of Elliott, IA; Wyatt Bailey of Red Oak, IA; Dakota Petty of Red Oak, IA; Mary Kate Soe and husband Matt of Red Oak, IA; Sierra Petty of Red Oak, IA; Dawson Culver of Stanton, IA; Xavier Olivio of Ft. Bragg, NC; Clayton Culver of Red Oak, IA; and Cash Culver of Red Oak, IA; great grandchildren: Tierra Parker, Lane Bailey, and Clarke Bailey; brother: Duane Petty and wife Diane of Atlantic, IA; brother-in-law: Dale Schrier of Hill City, SD; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM Thursday, December 22, 2022, at Elliott Church of Christ in Elliott, Iowa. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association or the Villisca Volunteer Fire Department. The service will be live streamed on the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel's Facebook page.
