Birthplace: Page County, IA Resided In: Red Oak, IA George Edward. Maher, age 86, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Friday, February 3, 2017 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. George was born December 4, 1930 in Page County, Iowa the son of Edward and Clare (Gutschenritter) Maher. He was raised in Page County, Villisca and Red Oak. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1949 and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He then attended Northwest Missouri State University graduating with a business degree in 1957. George was united in marriage to Patricia Adams on November 24, 1956 in Red Oak, Iowa. George taught school for one year in Des Moines before moving back to Red Oak. He worked for Fifield Furniture before starting at Houghton State Bank. George reluctantly retired after 44 years of service to the bank. During his tenure at the bank, Houghton State Bank was named #1 bank in the Hawkeye Bancorporation several times. George truly had a passion for his community of Red Oak. He had a goal to make Red Oak the best place to live, work, and play. He was involved in every volunteer organization you can imagine always striving to make Red Oak "A Shade Better". He stated on many occasions, "Community involvement is the rent you pay for the space you occupy". George was a man that loved his family, his friends, and his community. He will be fondly remembered as Mr. Red Oak. George was very proud of the recent accomplishment of the Highway 34 bridge over the river, a project he was involved with for many years. Preceding him in death were his parents and brother: Ralph Maher. Survivors include his wife: Pat Maher of Red Oak; children: Mike Maher and wife Dee and their children, Patrick and Kelsey Maher of Omaha, NE; Kim Robinson of Red Oak and her son, Erik Robinson and wife Mackenzie of Council Bluffs, IA; and Kristi Patrick of Red Oak and her daughters, Jill Patrick and fiance Dustin Steffen of Sioux Falls, SD and Jamie Werges and husband Tim of Red Oak; siblings: Fred Maher and wife Linda of Council Bluffs, IA; Vineta McArdle of Red Oak; Phil Maher and wife Carlene of Castle Rock, CO; and Ray Maher and wife Kay of Independence, MO; brother-in-law: Lynn Adams and wife Jacky of Red Oak; sister-in-law: Roberta Burgus of Yuma, AZ; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends including his beloved cat B.B. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 AM Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Red Oak. Burial with military honors will be at the Evergreen cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-8 PM with Rosary at 7 PM on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in George's name. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
