Birthplace: Montgomery County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Gayle L. Swanson, age 83, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Tuesday November 8, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Care Center after an extended illness. Gayle Louise Swanson was born February 9, 1922 in Garfield Township of Montgomery County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Harriett (Lake) Shaffer. She graduated from Red Oak High School in 1939 and started work for the Thomas D. Murphy Company. Gayle was united in marriage to G. Russell Swanson on February 21, 1943 in Red Oak, Iowa. They farmed in the Elliott, Iowa area before moving to Red Oak in 1972. Gayle worked for the Thomas D. Murphy Company where she was a member of the 15-20 year club. In later years she worked for the Nelson-Boylan Funeral Chapel, the Congregational Church and Acorn Acres. Gayle was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was a past district officer of the United Methodist Women. She was also a past district officer of the Montgomery County Federated Club, Business and Professional Women, Chairman of the Heart Association, involved with the American Cancer Society, and was a wedding coordinator. Gayle was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Russell Swanson on January 15, 1979; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Survivors include her brother: Harry Shaffer and wife Merle Jean of Emerson, Iowa; sisters: Doris Towne of Corning, Iowa; Blanche Sederburg and husband Milo; Jean Hughes; and Ruby Lister all of Red Oak, Iowa; many nieces and nephews including Jim Bond and wife Marie of Red Oak, Iowa; and Donna DeVries and husband Rod of Red Oak, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM Friday, November 11, 2005 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Nancy Schultz officiating. Burial will be in the Essex, Iowa Cemetery. There will be open visitation at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
