Gary Stephens, age 87, of Henderson, Iowa, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2025, at his home. Gary was born February 3, 1938, in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of Herbert and Genesee (Viner) Stephens. He lived his entire life on the family farm, graduating from Henderson High School in 1956. He attended US Trade School in Kansas City returning to farm with his dad. Gary married his high school sweetheart, Ladonna Ross on November 20, 1960, in Red Oak, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Lynnette, Lori, and Mark. Along with farming, Gary was a wood worker, making furniture, toys, and remodeling the family home. He was quite handy and could fix anything. Gary enjoyed traveling to see family in California and grandchildren who lived close by. He was a longtime member of the Henderson Christian Church where he was a Deacon and Trustee. Gary also enjoyed square dancing with the Henderson Grand Squares Club for many years. Playing cards with friends and family at get togethers was a favorite activity.
Preceding him in death were his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Sander and Mildred Ross; and brothers-in-law: Jack Ross and Clark Ross. Survivors include his wife of nearly 65 years: Ladonna Stephens of Henderson; daughters: Lynnette Stephens of Henderson, Iowa, and Lori Unis and husband Jerry of Santa Ana, CA; son: Mark Stephens and wife Nicole of Henderson; grandchildren: Garrison Unis of Colorado; Max Unis of California; and Aaron, Evan, and Audrey Stephens all of Henderson; brother-in-law: Norman Ross of Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law Barbara Stille of Lincoln, NE; and many other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life funeral will be held 10 AM Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the Henderson Christian Church with burial in the Emerson Cemetery at Emerson, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Friday, November 21, 2025, at the LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Henderson Christian Church, the Henderson Volunteer Fire Department, or AseraCare Hospice.
LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
