Birthplace: Shelby County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Garry L. Smith, age 66, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Sunday, May 18, 2008 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Garry Lee Smith was born September 26, 1941 in Shelby County, Iowa the son of Lynn Francis and Josephine Edna (Arkfeld) Smith. Garry was raised near Panama, Iowa graduating from high school in Panama. He served in the Military during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Thelma Schwarte and to this union five children were born. Garry farmed for many years and then went to work for Earl May Seed and Nursery in Harlan. Later he operated his own business, Garry's Garden and Landscaping in Harlan, Iowa. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and enjoyed gardening and collecting eagles. Survivors include his significant other: James Petersen of Red Oak, Iowa; children: Timothy Smith and Holly of Blair, Nebraska; Todd Smith and wife Pam of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Troy Smith of Harlan, Iowa; Trent Smith and wife Nettie of Des Moines, Iowa; and Tracy Smith and Mark of Harlan, Iowa; grandchildren: Carissa, Dillon, Taylor, Natalie, and Alita; brother: Marlin Smith and wife Phyllis of Panama, Iowa; sisters: Cherylene Huebert and husband Neil of Panama, Iowa and Valerie Sullivan and husband Bill of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. There will be open visitation at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
