Birthplace: Harrison County, MO Resided In: Emerson, Iowa Garland "Ward" Johnson, age 91, of Emerson, Iowa passed away Sunday, August 20, 2006 at his residence in Emerson, Iowa after an extended illness. Garland "Ward" Johnson was born May 26, 1915 in Harrison County, Missouri the son of Benjamin Franklin and Effie Jane (Beeson) Johnson. Garland was raised in Missouri and moved to Emerson in the 1930's. He was united in marriage to Annette "Nettie" Meyer on September 30, 1941 in Rockport, Missouri. Ward served in the United States Army during World War II. He was with the 921st Field Artillery Battalion. Upon his return from the war, Ward owned and operated a trucking business until the 1960's at which time he started his plumbing business and retired in the mid 1980's. He was a member of the Emerson American Legion Post and the Emerson Volunteer Fire Department. Ward was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Nettie on November 12, 1988; and his son: Bobby on December 16, 1978; sisters and brothers: Hazel Johnson; Clara Zula Jenkins; Ruby Carnagey; Ermyl Leazenby; Arlo Johnson; Frank Wayne Johnson; and Wilbur Johnson. Survivors include his son: Kyle Johnson of Leech Lake, Minnesota; daughter: Garla DeWall and husband Chad of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandchildren: Hans Christopher Johnson of Sacramento, California; Cassady Nyx Rider and husband Armond of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Devin Eugene DeWall of Albuquerque, New Mexico; great grandchildren Chase Johnson and Hannah Johnson of Sacramento, California; brothers: Virgil Johnson and wife Hazel of Laredo, Missouri; and Vernal Johnson and wife Velma of Moore, Oklahoma; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Thursday, August 24, 2006 at the Emerson Baptist Church in Emerson, Iowa. Burial will be in the Emerson Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
