Obituary

Birthplace: Rural Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Stromsburg, NE formerly Emerson, IA George LeRoy Johnson, age 95, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away peacefully at the Midwest Covenant Home, Stromsburg, Nebraska on March 15, 2012. He was born to John George and Helga Marie (Swenson) Johnson on November 11, 1916 at the family farm home near Red Oak, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Helen Mae Carlson on March 21, 1941. To this union three children were born: Bob, Jim and Pat. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. LeRoy is most fondly remembered for his unique humor, generous spirit, being able to fix anything, and reflecting the love of his Savior, Jesus Christ. LeRoy was a veteran of World War II (1942-1945) crossing the Atlantic 30 times aboard the US Coast Guard Destroyer Escort, DE-252 Howard D. Crow. After brief stints in milling, banking, and as Postmaster, he worked as a Rural Letter Carrier in Emerson, Iowa, until retiring in 1981. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and four sisters. Survivors include his wife of nearly 71 years, Helen Mae; son, Robert (Jodi) of Stromsburg, NE; son, James (Karen) of Westminster, CO; daughter, Patricia Trautman (Tom) of Plymouth, MN; one brother, Paul of Alma, NE; one sister, Alice Almquist of Essex, IA; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorial Services will be held 10:30 AM, Monday, March 19, 2012 at First Covenant Church in Red Oak, IA. Inurnment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials preferred to First Covenant Church, Red Oak. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
