Birthplace: Leon, Iowa Resided In: Emerson, Iowa Fredrick L. "Fred" Hembry, age 64, of Emerson, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Fredrick Lyle "Fred" Hembry was born December 6, 1947 in Leon, Iowa the son of Lyle and Hazel (Foland) Hembry. He graduated from Clarke Community Schools in Osceola, Iowa with the class of 1966. He attended Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Missouri where he met the love of his life, Cheryl Peterson. They were united in marriage on September 5, 1970 in Wayland, Iowa. They both graduated in 1972 and moved to Emerson, Iowa. Fred worked for HyVee in Shenandoah and Red Oak until 1976 when he and Cheryl bought Valley Grocery Store in Emerson. They operated the store until 1985. Fred then attended Northwest Missouri State University to update his teaching certificate. He taught at Oakland Riverside for four years and then Nishna Valley for 16 years where he coached softball and volleyball. Fred retired from teaching in 2001. He was a longtime member of the Emerson United Methodist Church, a former member of the Emerson Volunteer Fire Department, Emerson City Council, and the Emerson Community Club. Fred was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes Fan and a New York Yankees Fan. Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister: Linda Hembry; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Loren and Minnie Peterson; and brothers-in-law: Daniel "Bud" Martley; Russell Mason; Robert Palmer; and Alden Peterson. Survivors include his wife of 41 years: Cheryl Hembry of Emerson, IA; children: Carly Hembry and Matt McCollum and children Nevyn Cordell and Ava of Tabor, IA; Che Hembry and wife Lisa and their children Kya and Chace of Chicago, IL; and Ian Hembry and wife Tracey of Austin, TX; sisters: Louise Mason of Osceola, IA and Betty Palmer of Ankeny, IA; brother-in-law: Rick Peterson and wife Bonnie of Shell Lake, WI; sisters-in-law: Linda Metcalf and husband Steve of Oakville, IA and Janice Heinz and husband Russ of Burlington, IA; his very special friend: Benji; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Thursday, May 24, 2012 at the Emerson United Methodist Church with Pastor Denise Stevens officiating. Burial will be in the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Memorials are suggested to the Emerson Volunteer Fire Department, Emerson Public Library, or the Lupus Foundation of America. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
