Birthplace: Rural Marne, Iowa Resided In: Stanton, Iowa Fred Erickson, age 82, of Stanton, Iowa passed away Monday, November 24, 2003 at the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center in Red Oak. Fred Dale Erickson was born April 14, 1921 on a farm north of Marne, Iowa the son of Carl Arthur and Ethel (Corey) Erickson. The family lived on the farm near where Fred was born for the first eight years. They then moved to Atlantic for 1 year and later to Van Wert, Iowa where Fred graduated from high school in 1940. Fred, along with his two brothers, served in WWII in the Navy. He was trained at the Great Lakes Training Center and was stationed on the U.S.S. Chicago before it was torpedoed and sunk. He then served in New Caledonia. After the war the three Erickson brothers bought a farm that has been most recently farmed by the late Lois Erickson. Fred later bought his own farm east of the Strand Cemetery where Fred will be buried. He bought a house and moved into Stanton in 1995 and later to the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center in 2001. While on the farm, Fred raised cattle, hogs, some unique chickens, as well as ducks and geese. Preceding him in death were his parents; a nephew: Roger Lee Verwers, killed in Vietnam in 1967; and a brother: Ed Erickson. Survivors include his 5 sisters: Margaret Nelson of Des Moines, Iowa; Betty Szyperski of Anoka, Minnesota; Beverly Walker and husband Jim of Bellevue, Washington; Jennie Swanson of Columbia Heights, Minnesota; and Marie Harmon and husband Gordon of Springfield, Missouri; brother: Earl Erickson and wife Betty of Adel, Iowa; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, November 29, 2003 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Strand Cemetery in Adams County, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Friday, November 28, 2003 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
