Obituary

Birthplace: Rural Elliott, Iowa Resided In: Atlantic, Iowa formerly Villsica, IA Florence Gemmill Peterman, age 94, of Atlantic, Iowa formerly Villisca, Iowa, passed from her earthly life on August 16, 2016 at Heritage House. Florence was born November 16, 1921, at home on the family farm near Elliott, Iowa, to Duncan and Elsie (Wendler) Gemmill. When Florence was 9, her father passed away. She continued to live on the farm with her mother and her brother Earl after her father's death. When Florence's mother married Alfred Adams, the family moved to Red Oak, Iowa, where Florence graduated from high school in 1938. Florence attended Commercial Extension in Omaha. When there was a need for stenographers in Washington, D.C., Florence answered the call and traveled to the Capitol by train and began to work for the Joint Army and Navy Committee on Welfare and Recreation. Florence remembered moving with her co-workers to the new war department building, the Pentagon, before it was fully completed. In 1949, Florence married Gerald Wayne Peterman of Grant, Iowa. They moved to a farm near Morton Mills where they lived for the next 56 years. Florence was a partner in the farm operation-raising chickens, nurturing baby pigs, canning, cooking, caring for German Shorthair pups, and helping out wherever needed. During their marriage, Jim and Florence shared a love of baseball-especially the St. Louis Cardinals and the Atlanta Braves. They also were strong supporters of the Villisca Bluejays and the Atlantic Trojans. Florence was active in the Morton Mills church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Aide. Florence loved to garden, cook, read, and take care of those who needed an act of kindness or an encouraging word. Her grandchildren adored her and fondly remember the Golden Books she read to them, playing Candy Land, and her bottomless cookie jar. Her daily life was a testament to her strong religious beliefs. She was a member of the Montgomery County Historical Society, a supporter of the Villisca Theater Group, and was recognized as a longtime donor for the American Red Cross Blood Drives. Florence was preceded in death by her husband: Gerald Peterman, her brother: Earl Gemmill, and her son: Stanley Edward Peterman as well as her parents and other beloved family members. Surviving her are a daughter: Beverly Schelling and her husband Gaylord of Atlantic, Iowa; daughter-in-law: Susie Honeyman Peterman of Elk Horn, Nebraska; five grandchildren: Adam and Holly Peterman and great grandson Evan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Amber and Phil Sunderman and great grandsons Trent and Drake of Grant, Iowa; James Schelling of West Des Moines, Iowa; Dustin Schelling of Carterville, Illinois; Alex Schelling of West Des Moines, Iowa; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
