Birthplace: Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Fern A. Smith Olson, age 83, of Villisca, Iowa formerly of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Sunday, December 5, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Fern Aluia Smith Olson was born March 31, 1927 in Red Oak, Iowa the daughter of William Harold and Anna Marie (Bailey) Young. She received her schooling from Red Oak Schools. She was united in marriage to Carlton Cecil Smith on December 10, 1944 at the First Christian Church in Red Oak, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 2, 1972. She was united in marriage to Harold "Eugene" Olson on August 25, 1973 at the First Covenant Church in Red Oak, Iowa. Gene preceded her in death on June 22, 2005. Fern started working for Union Carbide Battery Company in 1956 and retired when they were Eveready Battery Company in 1984. She then worked at a grocery store giving out samples of products and also was a "flagman" for Montgomery County. Fern loved the outdoors and spent many hours gardening, canning, watching birds, enjoying her dogs, and camping. She was a self-taught guitar player, a clown for many functions including parades where she would hand out "funny feathers", President and Past-president of the Eagles Auxiliary, a member of the VFW Auxiliary, member of the Eagles Charity Riders, and a member of the Rangers Motorcycle Club of Omaha, Nebraska. Fern spent her later years listening to her radio to keep informed on current events. She kept the radio on 24 hours a day. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husbands; her son: Ronald Smith, her step-son: Rodger Olson; son-in-law: Mike Dial; grandchildren: Tim Stupp and Becky Hardy; step-grandchildren: Bobby Hall, Caleb Dial, and Sonia Walker; and brothers-in-law: John Wankum and George Schmid. Survivors include her daughters: Carolyn Cecile Templeton and husband Glen of Villisca, Iowa and Elva Marie Stupp of Stanhope, Iowa; many step-children including: Candice Dial and fiancé Robert Carpenter of Hastings, Iowa and Brenda Hall and husband Robert of Kansas; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; sisters: Lois Schmid of Red Oak, Iowa and Linda Wankum of Garden City, Kansas; brother-in-law: Carol Olson and wife Marina of Derwood, Maryland; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. JoAnn Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Rescue Unit, Villisca Good Samaritan Center, or the First Christian Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
