Evelyn (Evie) Sowers, age 97, formerly of Emerson, Iowa, passed away January 23, 2023, at the Avalon Care Home in Fairfield, California. She had been living in both daughters' homes until she fell on December 18, 2022. She declined rapidly and received hospice care the last three weeks of her life.
Evie was born, January 18, 1926, in Fremont County, Iowa, the youngest child of David and Althea Norton. She was baptized and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in Malvern, Iowa at the age of 12. She graduated from Strahan High School and was valedictorian of her class. On July 1, 1944, she married Merrill Sowers. They enjoyed farming in Montgomery and Mills Counties until his death in 1985. She was baptized at Oaks Community Church in 1977. Merrill and Evie were very active together at the Oaks Community Church, singing in the choir and singing duets, being active with the youth group and hosting Bible studies in their home. Evie was also active with the Women's Missionary Group. Evie continued to live on the farm near Emerson, Iowa, and the Carroll Duysen family rented her farmland. She became active with the Stonecroft Ministries in the 80's and 90's, serving as area representative for SW Iowa. She loved to have fun with her friends and family, participating in the Jolly Janes, Red Hat Ladies and opening the Wildflower Gift Shop and Tea Room at the age of 73. Always entertaining and sharing her love and talents, Evie was famous for her dinner rolls and pies, as well as fresh flowers from her garden. Evie loved adventures and traveling with her daughters and sons-in-law, especially going to the family reunions to see her siblings and families. She also loved connecting with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Evie is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Schreiner and Barbara Rebhan; son-in-law, Curt Rebhan; grandchildren and spouses, Tess and Joel Foster and Matt and Denise Schreiner; great grandchildren Mariana Foster and husband Damian Gatterburg, Joseph, Cecilia, Isaac, Elizabeth, Christopher, and James Foster; nieces and nephews and many cherished friends. She is predeceased by 10 siblings; son-in-law, Don Schreiner and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held at Oaks Community Church on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 10:30 AM. Visitation with the family will be Thursday, February 2, 2023 from 6 -7:30 PM at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel, Red Oak, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Oaks Community Church.
