Evelyn Marie Johnson, 94, of Henderson, Nevada, passed away on August 26, 2026. She was born on March 30, 1932, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to J. Albin and Lila M. Johnson. Evelyn grew up on the rural Kansas farm, graduated from Hutchinson High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas.
While performing on a college concert tour in Wichita, Evelyn met Vernon Johnson. They were married on August 7, 1955, and shared 46 years together. They made their home in Wichita, Kansas, where they raised their three daughters: Sonja, Heidi, and Sheri. The family later moved to Kearney, Nebraska.
Evelyn’s life was filled with music, family, and creativity. She loved playing the organ and faithfully served as the organist at First Lutheran Church in Kearney for 25 years. She was a talented flute player, a lifelong member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI), and enjoyed bobbin lacemaking, rock hounding, traveling in her RoadTrek RV, and spending time with her daughters and grandchildren. In later years, she lived in Phoenix, Arizona, and Henderson, Nevada, where she continued to enjoy music, family, and community.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vernon Johnson. She is survived by her daughters, Sonja Hoppe and her husband, Steven Hoppe; Heidi Johnson; and Sheri Johnson and her husband, Tony Peltz; her granddaughters, Genevieve Johnson and Jillian Johnson; her brother, Duane Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn will be remembered for her devotion to family, her lifelong love of music, and the joy she brought to those around her.
Funeral service will be held on September 5, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Essex, Iowa. Interment will follow at Essex Cemetery.
