Birthplace: Adams County, IA Resided In: Villisca, IA Eugene L. "Gene" Smith, age 86, of Villisca, Iowa, passed away Friday, September 30, 2016 at his residence after an extended illness. Gene was born April 9, 1930 in Adams County, Iowa the son of Mearl and Bernice (Kapple) Smith. He graduated from Lenox High School in 1948. He started his working career with Hoak Construction building electric light lines. He was united in marriage to Betty Baumbach on January 22, 1950 in Red Oak, Iowa. They traveled around Iowa and Missouri with Hoak Construction. Gene and Betty moved to Red Oak on December 1, 1952 where Gene worked for J.D. Oil Company. They moved to a farm east of Tenville, Iowa in October of 1952 and started farming. In December of 1960, they moved to their current home farm east of Morton's Mill, Iowa. Gene farmed, custom baled, and hauled livestock retiring in 1997 due to health issues. He took great pride in his farming. His heart was in preserving the land. You could see him going down the road in his red pickup with Max riding shotgun. Max was his faithful companion by his side till the end. His greatest love was his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He welcomed anyone and loved having company. Over the years, Gene served on the Villisca School Board, ASCS Board, Hacklebarney Watershed Board, was a Douglas Township Trustee, and was an assessor for Douglas Township. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Robert, Dale, Cleo, and Donald Smith; and grandsons: Bruce Smith and Connor Smith. Survivors include his wife of 66 years: Betty Smith of Villisca, IA; children: Dennis Smith and wife Paula of Davenport, IA; Keith Smith and wife Carol of Treynor, IA; Dwight Smith and wife Carla of Red Oak, IA; and Connie Geist of Red Oak, IA; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; brother: Marvin Smith and Judy of Corning, IA; sisters: Dorothy Bozwell and husband Lester of Red Oak, IA and Beverly White of Englewood, CO; sisters-in-law: Sharon Smith of Lincoln, NE and Shirley Baumbach of Council Bluffs, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Morton's Mill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Monday, October 3, 2016 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
