Red Oak, Iowa Elsie Elizabeth Nelson Dodd , 84, passed away on December 6 , 2011, at the Red Oak Good Samaritan Care Center in Red Oak, Iowa.
Elsie Elizabeth Nelson Dodd, the daughter of Carl and Elsie (Nenneman) Nelson was born December 17, 1926 in Sidney, Iowa. Elsie attended Sidney Schools and later attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Elsie was very involved in music, both band and vocal, throughout all of her school years and into her adult life and was a member of the Farm Bureau Chorus. It was there she met her husband, William (Bill) Harrison Dodd. They were united in marriage in Sidney on November 30, 1947. They were blessed with four children: Stephen, Daniel, Richard and Susan.
They made their home on a farm south of Red Oak near Coburg. Elsie was a very busy farm wife and mother. After all of the children were in school she went to work outside the home at the Murphy Memorial Hospital. She loved working there so much she said many times she would have worked there for free. Later in life, she became a devoted volunteer, giving her time to various groups and organizations. She enjoyed her church and community activities which included the Farm Bureau Chorus, Red Oak Monday Club, Presbyterian Circle and Kid's Klub and the Happy Warblers. Elsie volunteered at the Lemon Tree, the hospital auxiliary, fundraising for Nishna Productions, delivered Meals on Wheels, cooked at Kid's Klub, sang in the Presbyterian Church Choir and was in a bowl league at Red Oak Lanes. Elsie was always health conscious and really enjoyed the YMCA. She was well known for her wonderful cooking, and won the Apple Pie Baking Contest more than once at the Montgomery County Fair. At church, anyone would remember the wonderful dishes she fixed for various occasions. She was known as a master gardener, having the most beautiful array of flower beds and a yard perfectly landscaped.
Elsie and Bill enjoyed their leisure time activities which included square dancing, bowling, camping, fishing, attending the Iowa State Fair, Minnesota fishing trips and Arizona vacations with Mary and Bud. Of the upmost importance, to Elsie, was her family. No mother or grandmother was on the road more, transporting children to and from activities. She was the perfect loving mother, always making sure all of her children's needs were met - always putting them first. She loved her role as grandma, helping her granddaughters learn to cook and play the piano.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, William; son, Richard Dodd; her parents; three sisters, included her twin sister, Mary and one brother. Elsie is survived by her children, Stephen Dodd and wife Cynthia of Fremont, NE; Susan Dodd and Daniel Dodd of Red Oak, IA; her granddaughters, Stephanie Dodd and husband Justin Badger; Shelby Dodd Owens and husband Rob; Stacy Heuer Roth and husband Justin and Megan Heuer; brother-in-law, Bud Jorgenson; sisters-in-law, Isabel Dodd McGuire and Jackie Nelson, nieces , nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
